American Bully
A Majestic Canine Companion

The American Bully must convey an imposing impression of power in relation to its stature. It is compact, medium to large in size depending on the breed, with pronounced musculature and solid bone structure.

The head of the American Bully is imposing, with a short muzzle and a broad nose. The eyes, round or oval, are well set and narrow, and all shades of colour are accepted, except severe albinism.

The ears, high and sometimes cropped, and the tail, short in proportion to its size, but not docked, add to its distinctive appearance.

The American Bully standards do not specify a specific weight, but require the dog to maintain an athletic appearance without appearing overweight.

Height and weight of American Bully

  1. Weight From 31 to 54 kg
  2. Size of male From 43 to 51 cm

Historical Background

The American Bully originated in the United States in the 1980’s/1990’s and is the result of a cross between the American Staffordshire Terrier and the American Pit Bull Terrier, supplemented by other bulldog type breeds such as the American Bulldog, English Bulldog and French Bulldog.

This breed was created through the combined efforts of Dave Wilson and Carlos Barksdale, founders of the famous Razor’s Edge Pit Bull line. Through careful selection and appropriation of the best bloodlines of the time, particularly Mayfield and Hemphil, they laid the foundation for this distinctive lineage.

Originally based in Maryland, Dave Wilson and his Razor’s Edge Kennel were forced to relocate to Virginia when Prince George’s County banned Pit Bulls in 1997. Seeking to refine their selection, they worked with other breeders to perfect the traits they wanted to see in the American Bully.

The breed continued to evolve, culminating in a distinct style, the “Bully Style”, characterised by stocky dogs with an imposing head, broad chest, short muzzle and sturdy bone structure, all while adhering to the standards of the United Kennel Club (UKC) and the American Bully Kennel Club (ABKC). As of 15 July 2013, the American Bully is officially recognised by the United Kennel Club.

Temperament

The American Bully is an exemplary family companion, with a sociable nature that adapts perfectly to group living, but will not tolerate long periods of absence from its master.

Benevolent, courageous and protective, the American Bully is distinguished by its gentleness towards people and its own kind.

Any aggressive or overly timid behaviour is disqualifying by breed standards.

Affectionate, it regularly expresses its need for contact by seeking out cuddles and caresses. Less active than the American Staffordshire terrier, the American Bully enjoys walks in the countryside with its owner.

Curious and playful, it knows how to entertain its owners from the moment they wake up with its antics. A good watchdog, it is not specifically designed for work.
