Historical Background
The American Bully originated in the United States in the 1980’s/1990’s and is the result of a cross between the American Staffordshire Terrier and the American Pit Bull Terrier, supplemented by other bulldog type breeds such as the American Bulldog, English Bulldog and French Bulldog.
This breed was created through the combined efforts of Dave Wilson and Carlos Barksdale, founders of the famous Razor’s Edge Pit Bull line. Through careful selection and appropriation of the best bloodlines of the time, particularly Mayfield and Hemphil, they laid the foundation for this distinctive lineage.
Originally based in Maryland, Dave Wilson and his Razor’s Edge Kennel were forced to relocate to Virginia when Prince George’s County banned Pit Bulls in 1997. Seeking to refine their selection, they worked with other breeders to perfect the traits they wanted to see in the American Bully.
The breed continued to evolve, culminating in a distinct style, the “Bully Style”, characterised by stocky dogs with an imposing head, broad chest, short muzzle and sturdy bone structure, all while adhering to the standards of the United Kennel Club (UKC) and the American Bully Kennel Club (ABKC). As of 15 July 2013, the American Bully is officially recognised by the United Kennel Club.
